Mozilla’s Thunderbird<\/a> e-mail client has long been a favorite open-source alternative to Microsoft Outlook.<\/p>\n

This article will help you setup a IMAP email account in Mozilla Thunderbird version 78 on Windows 10.<\/p>\n \t\t

Adding your first email account to Thunderbird<\/h2>\n

If you just installed Thunderbird and need to add your first email account, you’re in the right spot!<\/p>\n

Step 1:\u00a0<\/strong>Open Thunderbird<\/strong>. This can be done by clicking the\"\" logo in the bottom left corner of your taskbar on your keyboard type mail, then select Thunderbird<\/strong> from the search results.<\/p>\n

Step 2:<\/strong> When Thunderbird<\/b>\u00a0opens for the first time, you’ll see a screen that looks like this:<\/p>\n

Step 3:<\/strong> Enter your Name<\/strong>, as you wish others to see it when you send e-mail via Thunderbird, as well as the e-mail address<\/strong> and password<\/strong> for the account you’re adding.<\/p>\n

In the bottom left, click\u00a0Configure manually<\/strong>. The window will expand so you can enter server and protocol information.<\/p>\n

Step 4: <\/strong>Since we’re configuring this account manually, you will need to enter your incoming and outgoing server information, as well as other information. Let’s review the information at the bottom of this window:<\/p>\n

Under the Incoming<\/strong> column:<\/p>\n

The Protocol\u00a0<\/strong>we are using is IMAP<\/strong>.
\nThe server should be\u00a0mail.yourdomain.tld
\n<\/strong>The port <\/strong>should be 993
\n<\/strong>In the drop down next to SSL<\/strong>, select SSL\/TLS
\n<\/strong>In the drop down next to Authentication<\/strong>, select Normal password
\n<\/strong>In the box next to\u00a0Username<\/strong> enter the full user@domain.tld<\/strong> username for the account you’re adding.<\/p>\n

Under the Outgoing <\/b>column:<\/p>\n

The server should be\u00a0mail.yourdomain.tld
\n<\/strong>The port <\/strong>should be 465
\n<\/strong>In the drop down next to SSL<\/strong>, select SSL\/TLS
\n<\/strong>In the drop down next to Authentication<\/strong>, select Normal password
\n<\/strong>In the box next to\u00a0Username<\/strong> enter the full user@domain.tld<\/strong> username for the account you’re adding.<\/p>\n

When you’ve finished, click\u00a0Done<\/strong>. Thunderbird will perform a connection test to validate the server information + username and password you have provided in the configuration are correct.<\/p>\n

Step 5:<\/strong> That’s it! If you see a window prompting you whether you want to make Thunderbird the default client for Mail, Calendars, and Contacts and not an error message, then congrats! You’ve added your first IMAP account to Thunderbird! \ud83c\udf89<\/p>\n

Adding additional IMAP email accounts to Thunderbird<\/h2>\n

Adding additional IMAP accounts in Thunderbird is pretty easy. This section of the knowledgebase article will walk you through this process.<\/p>\n

Step 1:\u00a0<\/strong>Open Thunderbird<\/strong>. This can be done by clicking the\"\" logo in the bottom left corner of your taskbar on your keyboard type mail, then select Thunderbird<\/strong> from the search results.<\/p>\n

Step 2:<\/strong> When Thunderbird<\/b> opens, you’ll see a screen that looks like this:<\/p>\n

To add a new account, click the \u2261 icon<\/strong> (hamburger menu) in the top right corner of Thunderbird below the X to close the application.<\/p>\n

Step 3:<\/strong>\u00a0 In the menu that drops down, click\u00a0Account Settings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Step 4:<\/strong> The\u00a0Account Settings<\/strong> window will open. In this window, you have the option to edit the settings for accounts you have already added to Thunderbird, as well as add new ones.<\/p>\n

To add a new email account, click\u00a0Account Actions<\/strong> in the bottom left corner, then click\u00a0Add Mail Account<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Step 5:<\/strong> A familiar window will open. Yep, it’s the same one we saw when we added our first email account to Thunderbird.<\/p>\n

Enter\u00a0Your name <\/strong>(as you wish others to see it when you send mail via Thunderbird),\u00a0Email address<\/strong>, and\u00a0Password<\/strong> for the account you’re adding.<\/p>\n

Then click\u00a0Configure manually<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Step 6: <\/strong>As before, the Setup window will expand and you will have the option to enter the server configuration information for the email account which you are adding.<\/p>\n
