As part of the system update feature, WordPress has an integrated maintenance mode which activates anytime you run software updates for WordPress Core, Plugins, or Themes. Whenever a user happens to visit your site during these update periods instead of seeing an error message, they’ll see a note saying your site is “Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.”<\/p>\n

The majority of the time when you run updates, they complete cleanly and instruct your WordPress site to go back to normal. But, as with software, sometimes things can go wrong. For example, maybe you mistakenly closed your browser tab during the update process, or you’re trying to update too many plugins at once and your site ran out of memory.<\/p>\n

Not to worry, this is really easy to fix!<\/p>\n

Step 1:<\/strong> Open your cPanel. There’s a lot of ways to do this, but the easiest way is to login to your Client Area<\/a>, then click the cPanel icon.<\/p>\n

Step 2:<\/strong> Next, click on the File Manager to open it up.<\/p>\n

Step 3:<\/strong> Inside your File Manager, double click the globe icon to the left of public_html to open your public_html folder.<\/p>\n

\r\n \t\t\tVery Important:<\/span> \t\t\t \t\t\t\t

\r\n \t\t\t\t\tIf you double click the text public_html, you’ll open the option to rename that folder. It is important you don’t rename this folder. To exit the rename mode, just click anywhere in the whitespace on the page then double click the globe icon to the left of the text – public_html. \t\t\t\t<\/p>\r\n \t\t\t \t\t\t\r\n \t\t<\/div>\r\n \t\t\n

Step 4:<\/strong> As part of the WordPress plugin\/theme\/core upgrade process, a file is created in the public_html folder called .maintenance. This file can be deleted to restore your WordPress site to normal function.<\/p>\n

Look for the file in your File Manager and click it once to select the file. Once selected, it will appear highlighted in blue.<\/p>\n

Once the file is highlighted, click the Delete option at the top to remove the file.<\/p>\n

A modal like the one below will pop up asking if you want to skip the trash and permanently delete the file. I think that’s a great option for this file, so I’m going to check that box, then click Confirm.<\/p>\n

Step 5:<\/strong> Return to your WordPress site in your browser and refresh the page. If you still see the error, clean your cache, then try to load the site again.<\/p>\n
