Their UI allows you to add\/remove\/update DNS entries for a variety of DNS record types.<\/p>\n<p>In this KB article, we will explore how to add and remove DNS records from the Cloudflare DNS Management area, and we&#8217;ll talk about what the various records are.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-to-manage-dns-records-in-cloudflare\">How to manage DNS records in Cloudflare<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Accessing the Cloudflare DNS Editor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first time you add your domain to Cloudflare, a scan of common DNS records is performed in an attempt to automatically add all of the domain&#8217;s DNS records to Cloudflare. Sometimes you may need to add, remove, or update DNS records later on though. We&#8217;ll talk about this later.<\/p>\n<p>Adjacent to the + Add Record button is the <strong>Search Field<\/strong>. This is really handy if you are managing a domain that has a lot of DNS entries, as it allows you to search through them to find what you&#8217;re looking for faster.<\/p>\n<p>The first column is the <strong>DNS Record Type<\/strong>. This is to indicate to you which type of DNS record the line entry is, be it an MX, CNAME, or A Record.<\/p>\n<p>The second column is the <strong>Name<\/strong> of the DNS record.<\/p>\n<p>The third column is the <strong>Content<\/strong> of the record. Depending on the type of record, this can be a domain name, an IP address, or other mixed alphanumeric and symbol characters.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>TTL<\/strong> column represents the TTL of the Record. TTL is a numerical value that determines how long a DNS cache server can serve a DNS record before reaching out to the authoritative DNS server and getting a new copy of the record.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Proxy Status<\/strong> column indicates whether Cloudflare is proxying this record, thereby obfuscating the origin IP address\/network where the resource is hosted\/located.<\/p>\n<p>The last column is the <strong>Edit<\/strong> option to allow you to edit a record.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Are you tired of slow web hosting? However, Cloudflare discourages using underscores due to limited browser support.    \t\t\t\t<\/p>\r\n    \t\t\t    \t\t\t\r\n    \t\t<\/div><!-- \/.ht-shortcodes-messages -->\r\n    \t\t\n<p>Some record types, such as A, AAAA, and CNAME, allow you to toggle the Cloudflare proxy on or off.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An orange cloud icon proxies traffic through Cloudflare for the DNS record <strong>Name<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>A grey cloud icon ensures traffic for the DNS record <strong>Name<\/strong> is not proxied to Cloudflare. Cloudflare still serves DNS for grey clouded DNS records, but no other Cloudflare features such as SSL, page rules, caching, WAF, etc.. are applied to these records.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-messages hts-messages--alert   hts-messages--withicon \"   >\r\n    \t\t\t    \t\t\t    \t\t\t\t<p>\r\n    \t\t\t\t\tGrey cloud icons for A, AAAA, or CNAME records will expose your origin IP address to attackers and allows them to attack your origin IP address directly even if you later proxy traffic to Cloudflare. Direct attacks to your origin IP are only mitigated by asking your hosting provider to change your origin IP address.    \t\t\t\t<\/p>\r\n    \t\t\t    \t\t\t\r\n    \t\t<\/div><!-- \/.ht-shortcodes-messages -->\r\n    \t\t\n<p>You should know, when adding a new record in Cloudflare, the record Type\u00a0<strong>will always<\/strong> default to n A record.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"a-records\">A Records<\/h4>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\">How to add an A record<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<p>A Records are necessary to direct a visitor&#8217;s browser requests to an origin web server.<\/p>\n<p>To add an A record:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1:<\/strong> Replace <strong>Value<\/strong> with a real IP address (you cannot use a Cloudflare IP address).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2:<\/strong> Click <strong>Add Record<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Multiple A records for the same subdomain can be added with different IP addresses.<\/p>\n<p>Cloudflare&#8217;s DNS will alternate requests to the various IP addresses provided. However, Cloudflare&#8217;s DNS will continue to alternate traffic to all specified IP addresses even if an IP address is unreachable.<\/p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n<h4 id=\"cname-records\">CNAME Records<\/h4>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\">How to add a CNAME record<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<p> CNAME Records\u00a0are necessary to direct a visitor&#8217;s browser requests to an origin web server.\u00a0 Unlike an\u00a0A record, the\u00a0CNAME\u00a0will point to a hostname like\u00a0www.example.com\u00a0instead of an IP address.\u00a0www.example.com\u00a0would then either have an\u00a0A record that lists the IP address or uses another\u00a0CNAME record\u00a0that points to a different hostname.\u00a0 Eventually, a chain of\u00a0CNAME records\u00a0must point to a hostname that resolves to an IP address.<\/p>\n<p>To add a\u00a0CNAME record:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1:<\/strong> Replace <b>Value<\/b>\u00a0with the target (destination) domain. Example:\u00a0<i>mysite.myhost.com<\/i>\u00a0Example:\u00a0<i>s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2:<\/strong> Click <b>Add Record<\/b>.&#8217;<\/p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n<h4 id=\"txt-records\">TXT Records<\/h4>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\">How to add an TXT record<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<p> TXT records are commonly used for mail authentication.<\/p>\n<div class=\"hts-messages hts-messages--info    \"   >\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t\tTXT records added via the UI have a max length of 2048 characters. You can add TXT records requiring more than 2048 characters via the Cloudflare API.    \t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \/.ht-shortcodes-messages --><\/p>\n<p>To add a TXT record:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1:<\/strong> Replace Value with real data, the contents of the record.<\/p>\n<pre>TXT @ v=spf1 include:example.net -all<\/pre>\n<p><strong>Step 2:<\/strong> Click <strong>Add Record<\/strong>.\u00a0&#8216;<\/p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\">How to add an MX record<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<p>MX records are necessary for the delivery of email to a mail server. Any MX record <strong>Server<\/strong> name requires a corresponding A record that lists the IP address of the mail server.<\/p>\n<p>To add an MX record:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1:<\/strong> Click Add Record.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2:<\/strong> Choose MX From the Type field to display the required MX record details.<\/p>\n<p>The mail server is the NDS hostname of the mail server.<\/p>\n<p>Priority is a relative number. The lowest Priority number in a group of MX records will have priority over the rest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3:<\/strong> Click Save.<\/p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n<h4 id=\"dkim-records\">DKIM Records<\/h4>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\">How to add a DKIM record<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<p>There is no DKIM record type. DKIM is instead configured as a DNS TXT record.<\/p>\n<p><i>DKIM records<\/i>\u00a0can often exceed the 255-character limit for\u00a0<i>TXT records<\/i>. Therefore, Cloudflare will automatically split these into multiple records at the same domain name, producing a record with a format similar to the following when queried:<\/p>\n<p><code>default._domainkey.example.com. 299 IN TXT \"v=DKIM1; k=rsa; p=&lt;encoded public key&gt;\" \"&lt;rest of public key&gt;;\"<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Remove quotation marks and spaces when adding\u00a0<i>DKIM records<\/i>\u00a0to your zone. Also, you do not need to prefix (escape) semicolons with a &#8220;\\&#8221; character for\u00a0<i>DKIM records<\/i>\u00a0added to Cloudflare.<\/p>\n<div class=\"hts-messages hts-messages--info    \"   >\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t\thttp:\/\/dkimcore.org\/tools\/ is a recommended online DKIM validation tool.    \t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \/.ht-shortcodes-messages --><\/p>\n<div class=\"dropdown-section\">\n<div class=\"dropdown-content\">\n<p>Some services require additional\u00a0<i>CNAME records<\/i>\u00a0for DKIM verification. Verification will fail for CNAME records used to verify DKIM unless there is a grey-cloud icon beside the\u00a0<i>CNAME record<\/i>\u00a0in the\u00a0<b>DNS<\/b> app.&#8217;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n<h4 id=\"spf-records\">SPF Records<\/h4>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\">How to add a SPF record<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<p>Although DNS specifications have deprecated the SPF record type in favor of TXT records, some DNS clients may still look for a TXT Record. You can add both an SPF record and a TXT record to ensure backward compatibility.<\/p>\n<p>SPF content as a\u00a0<i>TXT record<\/i> will look similar to the following. If you host with ChemiCloud, be sure to use our SPF record:<\/p>\n<pre>TXT @ v=spf1 a mx include:relay.mailchannels.net ?all<\/pre>\n<p>Contact your mail provider about\u00a0<i>SPF record<\/i>\u00a0content if you observe SPF failures in your email headers or if your mail is undeliverable.<\/p>\n<p>To add an SPF Record:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1:<\/strong> Replace\u00a0<strong>Value<\/strong> with real data.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2:<\/strong> Click <strong>Save<\/strong>.<\/p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n<h4 id=\"dmarc-records\">DMARC Records<\/h4>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\">How to add a DMARC record<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<p>Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting &amp; Conformance (DMARC) allows an email recipient to know if the email is protected by SPF and\/or DKIM. DMARC describes how the email recipient should process the email if neither of those authentication methods passes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"hts-messages hts-messages--info    \"   >\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t\tThere is no DMARC record type.
