{"id":955,"date":"2018-05-03T13:08:39","date_gmt":"2018-05-03T13:08:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chemicloud.com\/kb\/?post_type=article&#038;p=955"},"modified":"2020-08-09T19:48:02","modified_gmt":"2020-08-09T19:48:02","slug":"view-e-mail-message-headers","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/chemicloud.com\/kb\/article\/view-e-mail-message-headers\/","title":{"rendered":"How to View E-Mail Message Headers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this short article, we will show you how to view E-mail message headers for different Webmail applications such as Horde and Roundcube.<\/p>\n<p>But first, let&#8217;s find out exactly what a message header is, shall we?<\/p>\n<article id=\"general\">\n<h3 id=\"general-information\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>General information<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>E-mail header <\/strong>is the source information (or source code) encapsulated within an E-mail message, which contains valuable information about how the message was encoded and by whom.<\/p>\n<p>For example, it will tell you why an E-mail transmission has failed.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few pieces of information included inside the message header:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The server from which an incoming E-mail originated<\/li>\n<li>The server towards an outgoing E-mail was sent<\/li>\n<li>Intended recipient<\/li>\n<li>IMAP, POP3, SMTP Port numbers<\/li>\n<li>Whether the E-mail was received or rejected by the recipient\u2019s E-mail server<\/li>\n<li>The reason why the server rejected the E-mail if that is the case<\/li>\n<li>Any other information sent by the mail server<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The header information may prove useful when trying to find out why a user is experiencing failed E-mail transit.<\/p>\n<\/article>\n<article id=\"howto\"><\/article>\n<p>Retrieving a copy of email headers is different from a mail client to mail client.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"microsoft-outlook\">Microsoft Outlook<\/h3>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-messages hts-messages--alert   hts-messages--withicon \"   >\r\n    \t\t\t    \t\t\t    \t\t\t\t<p>\r\n    \t\t\t\t\tNote: This demonstration is using Outlook 2010. You can now see the full headers for the email you selected in step 1.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mac-mail\">Mac Mail<\/h3>\n<p>This demo assumes that you already have Mac Mail open.<\/p>\n<p>1) Click the email you wish to view the headers of<\/p>\n<p>2) Click View -&gt; Message -&gt; Headers<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s it! You can now see the full headers for the email you selected.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mozilla-thunderbird\">Mozilla Thunderbird<\/h3>\n<p>This demo assumes that you already have Mozilla Thunderbird open.<\/p>\n<p>1) Single click the email you wish to see the headers of<\/p>\n<p>2) Click View<\/p>\n<p>3) Then click Message Source<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s it! You can now see the full headers for the email you selected.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"gmail\">Gmail<\/h3>\n<p>This demo assumes you are logged into your Gmail account.<\/p>\n<p>1) Open the email you wish to view the headers of<\/p>\n<p>2) Click the down arrow next to the reply button to bring up the options menu<\/p>\n<p>3) Then click show original<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s it! You can now see the full headers for the email you selected.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"horde-webmail\">Horde (Webmail)<\/h3>\n<p>1) Log into Horde Webmail<\/p>\n<p>2) Open the email message<\/p>\n<p>3) Click the \u201cMessage Source\u201d link in the text menu at the top of the message.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"roundcube-webmail\">RoundCube (Webmail)<\/h3>\n<p>This demo assumes that you are already logged into RoundCube<\/p>\n<p>1) Open the message you wish to see the headers of by double-clicking it.<\/p>\n<p>2) Click the arrow down to reveal the email headers.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s it!
